The Grunt is a 31 grain, stainless steel, patented throw-away cartridge concept that coupled with your favorite field tip can be used on big game animals as well as small game animals. What the Merlin does is allow you to use the field tip you want (and tailor your broadhead mass), the blades just go along for the ride. The blades will actually bend, move, and deflect around bone to offer maximum penetration. For small game the cartridge offers you the option to "tip" your broadhead with a blunt field tip for more shock then penetration. In both cases you simply use standard field tips.
Grunt cartridges are designed to work with carbon arrows, aluminum arrows, and composite arrows as well as crossbow bolts. They will not damage any arrow shaft because the blades move and bend. Remember, the key to performance lies in your field tip choice. A slim, light weight, tapered tip will produce much more penetration for big game animals. A blunt, heavier field tip will penetrate less for more shock on small game animals.
